Into Views is proud to present to you our very first interview. We aim to bring you artists, writers, musicians and creative thinkers from many different disciplines, and ask them to share their insights on their working processes and their current projects. So, without further ado, we are handing you over to K. Patrick Glover.
what is your name?
K. Patrick Glover
how would you describe what you do?
I write things. I try not to get more specific than that. Words are my tools and I use them in a variety of ways for a variety of purposes.
what are you currently working on?
I’m writing an ongoing web comic called The Invisible Skein, which is being illustrated by the very talented Amanda Hayes. I’m also writing a weekly column on comic book nostalgia for Hypergeek. There are a couple of other projects in the works as well, including a mystery novel.
what has had the greatest influence on your work?
It’s an eclectic list. Hunter Thompson, Harlan Ellison, Warren Ellis, Stephen King, Robert Parker, Neil Gaiman, Lawrence Block, Gregory McDonald, Gerry Conway, Alan Moore.
what is the greatest misconception about you or your work?
That I have a particular style. I think the thing I hear most often when I start a new project is, “I didn’t know you could do that.” I
write a mystery, people are surprised that I can write a column. Or that I can write a comic. A lot of writers tend to specialize and I think that leads people to expect you to specialize. They get confused when you did conform to that.
what do you see as the main strengths and weaknesses of the medium you work in?
You can do anything with words. That’s the strength. In comics, you’re only as strong as your artist(s). I suppose that would be the weakness. I’ve just been lucky in finding a partner who seems to be able to pull images right out of my head. If anything, her work has made mine stronger.
how has technology impacted upon the work you do?
I couldn’t do what I do without technology. My column is online. My comic is online. I communicate with my collaborator online. I communicate with my readers online.
what’s the greatest piece of advice you would like to pass on?
Fight the urge to put things off. Time goes by so quickly. If you want to be a writer or an artist (or an actor or musician or photographer, etc) do it now. Don’t wait until you have the time, because you never will. You have to make the time.
