what is your name?
My name is Robin Cain and I am both a columnist and a novelist. I write a column on relationships for the Examiner at http://www.examiner.com/X-16469-Scottsdale-Relationships-Examiner and I just published a novel called WHEN DREAMS BLEED.
what are you currently working on?
I am currently working on my next novel (untitled at this point) and my regular column for the Examiner.
what has had the greatest influence on your work?
My greatest influence on my work has been a combination of life experiences and great books I’ve read. I would have to say that both have contributed to my writing in both areas. The greatest misconception about me or my work is that many people think it comes to me easily, when in fact, I struggle over every word. I have to find a rhythm with my words and be inspired. If either is missing, I keep at it until it feels right. Sometimes simple words in a sentence can trip me up for hours. Other times, it flows, but not often.
what do you see as the main strengths and weaknesses of the medium you work in?
The main strengths of my medium is the number of people I can reach through my column and with my book. The written and printed word is forever and can be passed from person to person. It is a forever thing, which I like. The weakness of my medium is almost the same thing – trying to reach the most people possible can prove very difficult.
how has technology impacted upon the work you do?
Technology has greatly impacted my work. My column is for an online publication, so if it wasn’t for the internet, it wouldn’t exist. Much, if not all, of my research is done online, as well. I’m not sure I’d exist as a writer if it weren’t for technology.
what’s the greatest piece of advice you would like to pass on?
The greatest piece of advice I can pass on is for any artist to stay with their craft and follow their heart. No one can please all the people all the time and the artist has to keep trying until they find their audience. It’s out there if you look hard enough.
where can we find you online?
I can be found online at my website http://www.robincain.com or my column (as noted above).
what are you reading at the moment?
I am currently reading THE WIFE: A NOVEL by Meg Wolitzer, but I’m not that far into it. I just finished THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN by Garth Stein and it was FABULOUS! I’m actually going to buy some copies for friends.
what are you listening to at the moment?
The only thing I’m listening to at the moment is my Blackberry telling me I have messages.
anything else we should know?
Anything else you should know? Just that I’m a FACEBOOK addict and you can find me under Robin Pope Cain and I’d love for you all to buy my book
